VERIFICATION OF COMPETENCY (VOC)
WHAT IS A VOC?
A Verification of Competency (VOC) is a non-accredited assessment that demonstrates workers ability to operate equipment and perform the responsibilities of their role. It is commonly used by employers in pre-employment to ensure an employee is competent in role requirements and operations.
WHY A VOC?
Workplace Health and Safety Laws enacted in 2012, states that employers are responsible for the health and safety of workers at the workplace. By undertaking a VOC, employers can ensure that workers were compliant with regulations in the unfortunate event of an accident on site. By having employers and contractors complete a VOC—ideally before starting work on site—will help show responsible precautions to ensure the health and safety of everyone on site.
Operators must hold the relevant RII competency for each piece of equipment. VOC assessments show that workers who hold a licence are still competent.
WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A VOC?
VOC assessor will conduct face-to-face practical and theoretical assessments on site, then will make a decision of competency. If successful, employees will recieve a competency card and can resume work. If unsuccessful, they will be required to complete training and be reassessed.
