Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements specified in the training package for RII30920 Certificate III in Civil Construction.

Civil Train’s Bridge Construction and Maintenance pathway is workplace focused. Participants need access to suitable civil construction activities, equipment and workplace opportunities that allow the required skills to be developed and demonstrated.

Depending on the participant’s unit selection, workplace opportunities may need to include bridge construction or maintenance, concrete works, formwork, precast components, site preparation, working at heights and other supporting civil construction activities.

Where the qualification is undertaken as a traineeship, the participant must be employed and registered under an appropriate training contract.

Before enrolment, Civil Train considers the participant’s goals, existing skills, workplace activities, training needs and language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills to determine whether the qualification and delivery pathway are suitable.

Training and Assessment

Civil Train delivers practical, industry-focused training that connects learning with genuine civil construction work.

Training and assessment are primarily workplace based, allowing participants to develop and demonstrate skills in relevant civil construction environments with support from their employer, workplace supervisors and Civil Train trainers and assessors.

Some units may also require scheduled face-to-face training or practical assessment where this is necessary to provide the required training environment, equipment, supervision or assessment conditions.

Training may involve activities such as:

• preparing and organising civil construction work
• locating and protecting underground services
• manual excavation and basic levelling
• supporting plant operations
• handling construction materials
• draining and dewatering work areas
• working safely at heights
• concrete bridge maintenance
• installing precast bridge components
• bridge concreting and formwork activities
• managing workplace risks and maintaining site records.

Assessment may include:

• workplace observations
• practical demonstrations
• knowledge assessments and assessor questioning

The duration and training schedule may vary depending on the traineeship or other training pathway, existing competency, Recognition of Prior Learning, credit transfer, workplace opportunities and the participant’s individual training plan.

Qualification Structure

To achieve RII30920 Certificate III in Civil Construction with the Bridge Construction and Maintenance specialisation, participants must successfully complete 26 units of competency: 8 core units and 18 elective units.

Civil Train’s program has been structured around these requirements. The final elective combination must continue to meet the national packaging rules and reflect the participant’s workplace activities, training needs and Civil Train’s capacity to appropriately deliver and assess the selected units.

Core Units

Bridge Construction and Maintenance Specialisation Core — Group D

All eight Group D units are required for the Bridge Construction and Maintenance specialisation.

Civil Train Bridge Construction Elective Program

In addition to the eight Group D units above, Civil Train’s current Bridge Construction and Maintenance program includes the following supporting elective units.

The complete Civil Train program therefore consists of the 8 core units, 8 mandatory Group D units and 10 further electives, for a total of 26 units.

Alternative electives may be considered where they better reflect a participant’s workplace activities or employer requirements. Any variation must continue to meet the RII30920 Bridge Construction and Maintenance packaging rules and must be within Civil Train’s capacity to appropriately deliver and assess.

Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer

Already experienced in bridge or civil construction?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) provides experienced workers with an opportunity to have existing skills and knowledge assessed against the requirements of the qualification.

Relevant evidence may include:

• employment and project history
• evidence of bridge construction, repair or maintenance work
• workplace records, plans or project documentation
• photographs or videos of relevant work
• verified supervisor or employer evidence
• previous qualifications, licences, tickets or training records
• practical demonstrations
• professional discussions with a Civil Train assessor.

Industry experience does not automatically result in recognition. The assessor must have sufficient valid, authentic, current and relevant evidence to determine whether the requirements of each unit have been met.

Where gaps are identified, Civil Train will explain what additional evidence, training or assessment is required.

The published RPL fee is $4,300. Where additional gap training and assessment is required, the published fee is $430 per unit.

Credit transfer may also be available where a participant has previously completed the same or an accepted equivalent nationally recognised unit of competency and provides appropriate evidence.

Funding and Fees

Queensland Government Traineeship Funding

Queensland Government subsidised training may be available to eligible participants undertaking this qualification through an approved traineeship pathway.

Eligibility, funding availability and any applicable student contribution fees are confirmed by Civil Train before enrolment.

Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ)

CSQ funding may be available to eligible participants where this qualification and Civil Train’s delivery arrangements are approved under the applicable CSQ program.

A $500 participant contribution applies where confirmed for the relevant Civil Train CSQ-funded pathway. Eligibility, subsidies and participant contributions are confirmed before enrolment.

Fee for Service

The published fee-for-service price for the full qualification is $12,850.

Recognition of Prior Learning

The published RPL fee is $4,300.

Where additional gap training and assessment is required following the RPL process, the published fee is $430 per unit.
